What’s new?
Panasonic’s begins 4680 battery mass production in Japan
Panasonic has officially launched mass production of its advanced 4680 battery cells at its Wakayama plant in Japan, a move set to transform the EV landscape. With five times the energy capacity of its predecessor, the 2170 cell, the 4680 promises extended ranges, reduced production costs, and improved affordability for EVs. Partnering with Tesla and other automakers, Panasonic is driving global EV adoption while advancing sustainability, as its Wakayama plant operates with minimal carbon emissions, aligning with the company’s eco-conscious goals.
Lucid motors recalls over 1,500 Air Pure RWD Models
Lucid Motors has recalled 1,539 Lucid Air Pure RWD vehicles from the 2024 and 2025 model years due to a short wiring harness in the rear subframe, which could lead to power loss and increase crash risks. The affected vehicles, produced between November 2023 and October 2024, will receive a longer wiring harness free of charge, with notifications starting December 20, 2024. Despite this issue, the Lucid Air Pure continues to impress with its 430 horsepower motor, 420-mile range, and $69,900 starting price, cementing its place in the luxury EV market.
Xiaomi’s Q3 2024 earnings soar, fueled by EV success
Xiaomi surpassed Q3 2024 expectations with RMB 92.5 billion in revenue, a 30.5% YoY growth, driven by the booming success of its EV division. Delivering 39,790 Xiaomi SU7 units in Q3 alone and introducing features like City Navigate on Autopilot (City NOA), Xiaomi aims to deliver 130,000 EVs by year-end. With advancements in autonomous driving and smart mobility, Xiaomi is solidifying its position as a major player in the electric vehicle market.
Stellantis launches STLA frame platform for EV trucks and SUVs
Stellantis has introduced the STLA Frame platform, designed to power electrified full-size trucks and SUVs like the upcoming Ram 1500 REV. Offering up to 500 miles of range for BEVs, 690 miles for REEVs, and impressive towing and payload capacities, the platform supports multiple powertrains, including hybrids and hydrogen. Delayed to early 2025 for validation, this innovation underscores Stellantis’ commitment to electrification and versatility in high-performance vehicles.
What Plug Do You Need to Charge Your EV Properly?
To charge your EV efficiently, it’s important to know the right plug for your vehicle. Common options include the slower J1772 (Type 1) for North America and Japan, the versatile Mennekes (Type 2) standard in Europe, and the high-speed CCS for rapid DC charging worldwide. CHAdeMO, popular in Japan, is being phased out in favor of CCS, while Tesla owners benefit from ultra-fast Superchargers with proprietary plugs. Each plug offers different charging speeds and compatibility, so always check your vehicle’s requirements and charging station availability to stay powered on the go.

The 2025 Kia EV9, produced in the U.S., qualifies for a $3,750 federal EV tax credit due to battery sourcing from China, which disqualifies it from the full credit under the Inflation Reduction Act. The base model starts at $56,225, and while U.S. production began in June, most EV9s are still imported from South Korea. Kia is working on meeting tax-credit requirements with a new Georgia battery plant, though full qualification may be delayed.
Ford announced it will cut 14% of its European workforce, totaling around 4,000 jobs, primarily in Germany and the UK, due to challenges in the shift to electric vehicles (EVs) and competition from subsidized Chinese EVs. The company cites weak demand for EVs, high operating costs, and lack of government support as factors. The cuts, representing 2.3% of Ford’s global workforce, come as the company reduces production of certain EV models and urges the German government to provide better incentives and infrastructure for EV adoption. This follows a 17.9% drop in Ford's European sales through September.
